Start Date 28 January 2027. This role is term time only.
Tangaroa College is seeking a dedicated, patient, and skilled ESOL Teacher Aide with a strong focus on Numeracy to join our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department.
Many multilingual learners face unique challenges when navigating mathematical language, word problems, and numerical concepts alongside a new language. In this role, you will play a crucial part in bridging the gap between English language learning and mathematical understanding.
Working directly under the guidance of the Head of ESOL and classroom teachers, you will deliver targeted numeracy and literacy support to ESOL students. Your main focus will be helping students build mathematical confidence, grasp core numerical concepts, and develop the language skills required to succeed in mathematics and across the curriculum.
Key Responsibilities
● Targeted Numeracy & Literacy Support: Assist teachers in classroom activities with a primary focus on improving students' numeracy skills, mathematical vocabulary, and general literacy.
● Small Group & 1-on-1 Coaching: Deliver tailored numerical learning support to individual students and small groups to build confidence and independent problem-solving abilities.
● Assessment & IEP Assistance: Help prepare, administer, and check numeracy-related assessments; track student progress; and assist in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs/ILPs).
● Collaboration & Reporting: Document student milestones in numerical learning, submit regular progress reports to the Head of ESOL, and share effective numeracy strategies with the team.
● School Culture: Uphold Tangaroa College values, maintain a culturally sensitive learning environment, and commit to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Person Specification
● Demonstrated experience and strong competence in supporting school-level numeracy and basic mathematics.
● Strong English communication and interpersonal skills to explain mathematical concepts clearly to language learners.
● High patience, flexibility, punctuality, and cultural awareness.
● Excellent organizational skills for record-keeping and student tracking.
● Commitment to student safety, child protection, and professional development.
● Previous experience as a Teacher Aide or Educator working with ESOL/multilingual students.
● Familiarity with numeracy development frameworks and IEP/ILP support.
● Proficiency in additional languages (e.g., Pasifika or Asian languages relevant to our school community).
If you have a strong background in numeracy support and a passion for empowering multilingual students, we encourage you to apply.
