If you're an Industrial Automation Engineer doing the same projects on repeat and want more variety and SCADA projects focus, this is for you.
This is a Hamilton-based role where SCADA development is a key part of the work, alongside PLC and HMI programming. The SCADA side is where the depth is: building the database, pulling data in from PLCs made by other manufacturers, writing scripts, and laying out screens that are easy for operators to read.
This role naturally gives you exposure to a wide range of industry sectors. Some of the ones you'll work in are dairy, water and wastewater, food and beverage, aquaculture and infrastructure.
The work is a steady flow of smaller jobs rather than one big project that runs for a year. You'll have a few on the go at once.
The other thing engineers always ask about is travel. Here you'll head to site for commissioning, but the longest you'd be away in one go is 2 to 3 weeks. Across a full year, it usually adds up to 4 weeks.
Why you'll love this
The industry sector variety. Few integrators work across this many industries, so you'll keep learning new processes and control systems instead of running the same plant over and over.
A large team with establised processes and code libraries in place so you can learn from other projects adn engineers around you
Travel that respects your life. Short site stints, and sensible yearly totals.
Stability: this is a well-established business with a full and varied order book at a time when some integrators are struggling. As you build experience, there's room to step up and take ownership of projects, and there's a secret carrot there if you do. Talk to me to find out more.
What you'll do
Build SCADA applications, from the database and data acquisition through to the graphic screens
Connect SCADA to PLCs from different manufacturers, then work with that data: trends, scripts and passing it on to other systems
Write and commission PLC and HMI code alongside the SCADA
Work on projects from design through to site commissioning
Move across different sectors and project types, so every job is different
Build your process control experience with senior engineers around you
What you'll need
Intermediate to Senior-level Industrial Automation Engineering experience
Hands-on SCADA application development: you've built the database, the communications and the screens yourself, not just operated or maintained them
Relevant platforms:
#1 AVEVA System Platform and Rockwell FactoryTalk View SE (most sought-after)
#2 Ignition, InTouch, Wonderware and GE iFIX (nice-to-haves). Ignition use is growing in the business, and you'll have people around you to learn from.
C# scripting within SCADA environments
Familiar with industrial communications protocols like DNP3, OPC, Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP and Modbus serial
PLC programming experience on any major brand. If you can program one, picking up another is quick
Process control experience, ideally from process-heavy industries such as dairy, food and beverage, water or chemical
You're open to site travel, including the occasional 2 to 3 week stint
Other things worth knowing
Overtime is paid at your base rate for planned, pre-approved hours
The chance to step up, lead projects and grow into more senior work
About the company
This is a New Zealand owned systems integrator with offices in Hamilton and Auckland, and a team that works across an unusually wide range of industries. Where a lot of integrators specialise in one or two sectors, this business spans dairy, water, food and beverage, infrastructure and more.
That breadth is a big part of why it's a stable place to work. The order book is full and varied, and the work isn't tied to the ups and downs of any single industry.
Location
Hamilton is a city that's easy to get around, more affordable than Auckland or Wellington, and well placed for the wider Waikato. If you're Auckland-based and the rest of this fits, they're open to Automation Engineers there too.
