Build your consulting career working with innovative New Zealand businesses as a Research & Development Consultant.

This is an opportunity for someone with a background in science, technology, software, data or engineering with existing knowledge or experience of research and development incentives who enjoys understanding how businesses operate, building strong client relationships and working through complex commercial and technical issues.

You’ll work directly with businesses undertaking research, development and innovation across New Zealand and Australia, helping them navigate R&D tax incentives and other government support.

We’re looking for someone who is technically curious, ideally with some existing R&D knowledge, the ability to turn complex information into clear, well-structured documentation and the confidence to engage directly with clients. You’ll bring energy, sound judgement and a genuine interest in learning how different industries innovate.

The role

The role combines technical investigation, analysis, writing, client engagement and project management, with exposure to business owners, engineers, software developers, scientists, product teams and finance professionals.

You’ll contribute to R&D advisory engagements from initial discussions through to completion. You’ll meet with clients to understand what they are developing, the technical challenges they are working through and the experimentation involved. You’ll research unfamiliar technologies and industries, analyse evidence and work with both technical and financial stakeholders to build a clear picture of each R&D project.

A key part of the role is translating complex technical information into clear, robust documentation. You’ll prepare project descriptions and supporting analysis, assist with data review, contribute to funding applications and RDTI claims, and help keep client engagements, deliverables and deadlines on track.

Your expertise

You’ll have a relevant technical foundation and the ability to learn quickly, work through ambiguity and communicate with a wide range of people.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or practical experience in science, technology, software, data, engineering or a related discipline

  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the confidence to investigate unfamiliar topics and identify the important details

  • Clear, structured writing and the ability to explain complex concepts in a practical and accessible way

  • Strong Excel skills, together with an interest in software and emerging technologies, including generative AI

Experience in accounting, tax, consulting, professional services, R&D incentives or government funding would be useful, but it is not essential. Most importantly, you’ll take ownership, contribute to the team and be comfortable moving between detailed technical discussions and clear, practical client communication.
