About New Zealand Blood and Organ Service

New Zealand Blood and Organ Service (NZBS) is dedicated to saving lives. Every year, tens of thousands of generous people donate their time, blood and plasma to us. In addition to our vein-to-vein service in transfusion, we also provide national services in therapeutic venesection and apheresis, organ transplantation, cellular therapies and tissue banking. We exist to ensure the efficient delivery of safe blood and tissue products on a time critical basis throughout New Zealand and through the generosity of our donors; we are able to help save lives.

Our shared values are at the heart of our organisation's culture and guide our behaviour each and every day. They inspire us, motivate us and drive us to provide the very best service to the New Zealand public.

The role

Reporting to the Clinical Surveillance Manager, the Haemovigilance and Lookback Manager plays a key role in supporting donor and patient safety through the delivery and continuous improvement of NZBS's Haemovigilance Programme and Lookback processes.

You will lead NZBS's lookback programme, driving continuous improvement and alignment with international best practice. The role includes contributing to national haemovigilance and pharmacovigilance reporting, analysing adverse event data, providing expert advice on complex cases, supporting stakeholder education, and identifying emerging risks to donor and recipient safety.

This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future direction of haemovigilance and lookback activities in New Zealand.

About you

You are a motivated healthcare or scientific professional who enjoys working with complex clinical information and collaborating with others to solve challenging problems, and drive improvements. You are comfortable navigating situations where information may be incomplete or evolving, applying sound judgement and analytical thinking to reach evidence-based decisions. You build strong and productive relationships, communicating effectively in sensitive situations.

In addition, you will:

  • Demonstrate intellectual humility, actively seeking diverse perspectives, challenging assumptions (including their own), and remaining open to changing views when presented with new evidence.
  • Be able to shift perspective, working in the detail and also zoom out to see the bigger picture and emerging patterns while helping others do the same.
  • Have a proven track record of building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders in difficult or sensitive situations and finding common ground.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in medical laboratory science, blood banking, nursing, pharmacy, public health, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working in healthcare, laboratory, blood service, pharmacy, public health, or other quality-regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of haemovigilance, pharmacovigilance, or transfusion safety principles.

What we offer

  • A supportive and highly specialised clinical environment
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development
  • The chance to contribute to nationally significant patient and donor safety programmes

If this sounds like the opportunity you have been waiting for, we look forward to receiving your application.
