Tararua District Council is responsible for a large rural district in the lower North Island, with communities spread across the district's towns and farming areas. The Council's Building Services team keeps buildings across the district safe, healthy, and compliant, while supporting the builders, developers and property owners who invest in the region.

The Senior Building Officer is a hands-on technical role, split between time out on site and time processing applications. Reporting to the Team Leader Building Operations, you will:
  • inspect building, plumbing and drainlaying work, including pre-inspection research and on-site plan interpretation;
  • assess and process building consents, Project Information Memoranda, Certificates of Acceptance, Certificates for Public Use and Code Compliance Certificates;
  • provide clear, practical advice to builders, designers, property owners, and the public on building control processes and applications;
  • monitor building safety and compliance across the district, investigating issues and taking action where needed, including notices to fix and infringement notices;
  • help identify potentially earthquake-prone buildings, and respond to building matters during emergencies;
  • manage your own workload to meet service standards and statutory timeframes, and look for ways to improve how the team works.
This role suits someone who knows how buildings go together. You might be an experienced building control officer, or an established tradesperson with a strong background in residential or commercial construction who is ready to move off the tools into a regulatory career. Registration as a Licensed Building Practitioner, plumber or drainlayer would be highly regarded.

You will bring several years' proven experience in building control or the building industry, ideally including inspection and/or consent processing work, a working knowledge of the Building Act 2004, and a qualification that meets the BCA Accreditation Regulations, or be working towards one. A Site Safe Passport and BOINZ membership would be advantageous.

Just as important is how you work with people. You will bring sound judgement, a practical and solutions-focused approach, and the ability to communicate clearly with everyone from builders on site to homeowners at the counter. A current NZ driver's licence is required.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced building officer, or a suitably qualified tradesperson looking for a new challenge, to join a supportive team and play a real part in the Tararua community.
