Information Assistant (Trainee)

House of Lords – Parliamentary Knowledge and Information (PKI)

BELONG HERE. TOGETHER, WE MAKE PARLIAMENT HAPPEN.

As an Information Assistant (Trainee), you’ll play an important role in supporting the UK’s parliamentary democracy. Your work will help Members carry out their responsibilities effectively — contributing to something bigger than any one role.

You’ll be part of a collaborative community, working alongside colleagues from a wide range of professions. Together, we make Parliament happen.

You’ll be based on the Parliamentary Estate in Westminster — a unique working environment shaped by history and powered by the people who work here today.

In this role, you’ll work closely with a wide range of colleagues across Parliament including archivists, digital archivists, and information managers. This provides a unique opportunity to build valuable relationships, develop expertise across multiple disciplines, and contribute to work of lasting national significance.

Your work will support Parliament in managing information responsibly and effectively, helping to ensure compliance with information legislation while also enabling greater public understanding and engagement with Parliament's work. Through this, you’ll make a meaningful contribution to preserving and improving access to Parliament's documentary heritage.

What you’ll be doing

This is a role for people who are thinking about a career in the knowledge and information field but don’t yet have the training and experience to make it a reality.

You'll have the opportunity to gain experience of all aspects of the work of PKI during your time here: The Information & Records Management Service and Information Strategy & Governance teams work closely with the business to ensure Parliamentary information is well managed. The Collections Development & Access team are responsible for Parliamentary information selected for permanent preservation, both digital and paper-based formats, and for cataloguing and transferring records to The National Archives so they can be consulted by researchers. The Strategic Partnership team manages engagement activities and communications. And the House of Lords Information Compliance team ensure we meet our obligations with regards to legislation such as Freedom of Information and UK GDPR.

You'll be able to undertake your own projects in areas such as archives, information management, and digital preservation, as well as contributing to ongoing tasks such as supervising internal archive users and supporting Freedom of Information requests.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who can bring their skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution here.

You’ll have:

  • An interest in pursuing a career in the information sector.
  • Strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage your own workload.
  • A collaborative and flexible approach to achieving your goals.

For full details, please see the job description.

What you’ll get in return

Working at the House of Lords means joining a community that values your wellbeing, growth and contribution.

You’ll benefit from:

  • 30 days annual leave (rising to 35 after one year).
  • Generous Civil Service pension scheme.
  • A comprehensive Parliamentary health and wellbeing programme.
  • Access to a wide range of learning and development opportunities across diverse professions.
  • The chance to witness democracy in action and work in a place of historic national significance.

The work we do is vital to the House of Lords — the second chamber of the UK Parliament. It plays a critical role in making laws, scrutinising government, and providing independent expertise on national issues.
